Integrating art &architecture: from conception to construction

Why integrate art and architecture? What is the process to select, create, and design art into a building?

Join AIA Spokane and OneAEC for a panel discussion that will explore the importance of art within the built environment and how to go about including it in your projects. Panelists were involved in planning, designing, and executing the new Spokane Falls Community College Fine Arts Building. This project is not only a space to learn and to create art, it also incorporates art into the building itself as a custom-made curtain wall facade by artist Jill Anholt of British Columbia. 

Rustin Hall, Principal-in-Charge, ALSC Architects, will speak to the logistics of integrating art and architecture, funding, construction, and pros and cons from both the Owner and A/E perspectives.

Paul Neuhaus (Senior Project Designer, HGA, Minneapolis) will speak to the design of the building for arts education and how it incorporates art into the building itself.

Marissa Laubscher will share her perspective from ArtsWA on selecting an artist and why art is important in public spaces. 

Jill Anholt will share about the custom-made curtain wall facade she created for the new building.

MODERATOR:

Iren N. Taran, AIA, Project Manager & Architect, ALSC Architects

Iren is an experienced architect with a passion for traveling the world. She has a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from Washington State University and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from Portland State University. Throughout her career Iren has worked on a variety of projects ranging from single-family residential, hospitality, and sports/recreation facilities to higher education, embassy compounds and million square-feet office and condominium developments - throughout the U.S. and internationally. Iren places a great deal of emphasis on close collaboration between professionals in different disciplines.

PANELISTS:

Rustin Hall, AIA, Principal, ALSC Architects 

Rustin Hall is a dynamic leader dedicated to crafting progressive design, management and project planning solutions. He enjoys collaborating with talented co-workers, quality clients, and consultants. A field trip in third grade to see a home under construction inspired Rustin to pursue an architecture career. He received a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from Washington State University. Over the years, Rustin has volunteered countless hours at various non-profit organizations. He leads by example and encourages ALSC’s employees to do their part to make our community a better place.

Jill Anholt, Artist 

Jill has received national and international awards for her public realm artworks. Many awards recognize the role of her work in sustainability and placemaking, either on their own or integrated within design projects. Jill’s work explores hidden stories, systems, and conditions of a particular place which she weaves into dynamic spatial installations that invite active engagement with a viewer. Her process, rooted in the rigour of her sculpture and architectural education, embraces a wide variety of scales and materials, and is engaged with both community and design team collaboration. Her built work often incorporates illumination and interactivity and ranges from smaller scale interpretive features to complex, integrated civic projects for municipalities and developments across North America.

Paul Neuhaus, AIA, LEED AP, Senior Project Designer & Architect, HGA

Paul's expertise lies in designing educational and cultural projects with environments for gathering, community interaction and active learning as well as nursing, bioscience and advanced technology labs, forensics labs, offices for investigators, computer labs, student services, administrative offices, and classrooms. He collaborates  with clients to understand their unique needs and goals and discover the relevant opportunities of the sites and programs. Paul's clear and inclusive design leadership builds trust and contributes to a smooth design process.

Marissa Laubscher, Senior Project Manager, Art in Public Places, WA Arts Commission Representative

Marissa Laubscher is a Senior Project Manager for ArtsWA’s Art in Public Places team and has worked in the public art field for over 14 years. She travels across the state to facilitate site-responsive artwork commissions in public schools, colleges, universities, and state agencies. Melissa facilitated the art process for the integrated artwork by Jill Anholt for the new Fine &Applied Arts Building at Spokane Falls Community College. She is passionate about bringing art experiences to the places where people live, work, play, and study. She strives to support the next generation of public artists in our region by providing paid opportunities for them to create work, as well as opportunities for them and be inspired by and learn from artworks created by established public artists.
