EFFECTIVE NEGOTIATIONS

Join us for this special breakfast and half-day seminar!

When successful in marketing, it is essential to negotiate fees with the greatest opportunity for profitability. A comprehensive understanding of establishing goals, appropriate preparation and proven techniques for successful negotiations is essential for every firm. Most approach the negotiation of contracts and fees as another task. However, negotiations must be used to establish the relationship with clients that will last for the entire project. Steve will lead an interactive session beginning with a new approach to negotiations. It will focus on the time and energy to be devoted to negotiation preparation and offers a range of high-results techniques to achieve successful outcomes focused on the interests of the participants and their organizations.

Steven Isaacs, PE, Associate AIA

Steven has 30 years of experience leading design and construction firms and major engineering, architecture and planning projects throughout the United States and overseas. His career in practice includes serving as President of SmithGroup California. Prior to the merger with SmithGroup, he was CEO and president of Stone Marraccini & Patterson (SMP) an international multi-office architectural and planning practice with over 150 employees. He held several positions in SMP including managing director of the San Francisco office and chief financial officer. Under Steve’s leadership, both SmithGroup and SMP were primarily focused on health care and institutional work, including major projects for Veterans Administration, several University of California Campuses and Kaiser Permanente. Prior to that, Steve worked for a decade with Bechtel Incorporated on a variety of significant design and construction assignments in San Francisco, Boston, Washington DC, New York, Baltimore, Saudi Arabia and San Juan PR.

Steve’s expertise in conflict resolution is widely known in the industry. He has served as a mediator and facilitator on large, complex projects where the number of parties and diversity of interests presented a major challenge in achieving the project goals. Steve was able in each situation to create accord and generate mutual understanding and benefit to resolve conflicts as they arose, and to bring the projects to successful completion. Within his role leading an architectural organization, Steve was responsible for all negotiations with clients and contractors.

Since the late 1980s, Steve has taught negotiations skills to thousands of professionals at architecture, engineering and construction firms across North America. He is one of the most highly regarded teachers of negotiations skills within the A/E/C industry. Steve actively pursues new developments and emerging best practices in the field of negotiations and conflict resolution, and incorporates them into his work.
